Eastern to Add Men's & Women's Rugby

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. — Eastern University has announced it is continuing to expand athletic opportunities with the launch of men's and women's collegiate rugby. The addition of these two programs will further enrich campus life and support the University's commitment to holistic student development. The Athletic Department will start an immediate search for a Director of Rugby with the intention of beginning initial competition in the spring of 2027.

Both programs will likely begin in Division III within the National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) framework. The intention, according to Brian Bingaman, Eastern's Director of Athletics, is to build the programs to compete with collegiate programs at all levels of the NCR. Rugby teams compete in full-sided games (15 aside) in the fall and rugby 7's, a fast-moving high-scoring version of the game with seven players on the field at a time in the spring.

Although designated as club programs, both Eastern Rugby teams will operate with an elevated varsity-style experience. They will receive comprehensive support services consistent with varsity student-athletes, including strength and conditioning, sports medicine, academic support, opportunities to compete, and access to athletics facilities.

This enhanced club model reflects Eastern's commitment to broad-based participation and meaningful opportunities for student engagement.

"These programs enhance campus life, create new opportunities for student engagement, and align with our mission and values," Bingaman said. "Our Director of Rugby will establish a sustainable competitive model and cultivate a culture for both programs that is aligned with the University's values."

Over recent years, Eastern has found success in adding programs and investing in growth opportunities. Eastern Football won a MAC Championship in the program's third year of varsity competition, and Eastern Women's Flag Football and Men's and Women's Wrestling have each had successful debut campaigns.

Through the addition of men's and women's rugby, Eastern continues to strengthen athletics as an extension of its mission as a diverse, Christ-centered university committed to faith, reason, and justice, preparing student-athletes to lead and serve both on and off the field.
