PRINCETON, N.J.— Eastern University Women's Wrestling opened the program's second season with a strong showing at the Princeton Invitational.
Zoey Haines and
Savannah Witt won titles and Alexis Padden and
Kate Prior reached semifinals.
The Eagles brought 13 wrestlers to the invitational and saw many advance through the brackets.
Haines earned bonus-point wins in her first four contests at 145. The sophomore pinned her first four opponents in three total minutes. In her semifinal, she matched up against an opponent who beat her in the Regional final last year. She trailed 8-0 before rallying to tie the score and win by pin 98 seconds into bout. In the final, she recorded the final takedown of the match to beat Presbyterian's Maddie Kubicki, 16-15. Kubicki came into the tournament ranked second nationally.
After a bye in the opening round, Witt won by technical fall in her first bout before collecting pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals. She closed out her final with a technical fall in 98 seconds
Padden and fellow first-year
Kate Prior wrestled at 180. Padden won her first match by technical fall and pinned her second opponent in 10 seconds. She lost to the eventual champion in the semifinal. Prior, who will likely wrestle at 160 during the season, won for first two matches with pins before quitting out an 8-5 win over a regionally ranked opponent from Ursinus. Both first years fell in their consolation bracket matches and did not compete for fifth.
"Today was exactly the start of season we were looking for," Head Coach
Andrew Taylor said after the meet. "Our newcomers and first years experienced their initial exposure to college level wrestling and our returners got to pick up right where we left off in March. Our staff was able to gather much needed information from these matches and our athletes began building their competitive resumes for the season. We're ready to keep building."
The Eagles are at Gettysburg next Sunday.
