In a program that has enjoyed enormous success, the 2011 Women’s Volleyball Team stands apart. After an amazing regular season that included a 21-match winning streak, the 2011 team broke through to win an NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship and to advance into the National Final Four.
In a year where they had already won 30 three-set matches, the Eagles were faced with a pair of nail-biters in their final two tests at the Regional Tournament. In the semifinal, they trailed Hiram 11-7 in the fifth set, but rallied after a timeout to win eight of the next ten points to win 15-13.
The next day, the Eastern Eagles faced off against their long-time nemesis Juniata Eagles with a trip to St. Louis on the line. The match nearly defies description. After the two teams split the first two sets, Eastern fought off five set points to win the third set, 36-34. Eastern trailed 24-17 in the fourth set and fought off nine set points to win 28-26.
The 2011 team was ranked in the top-10 in every AVCA Weekly Poll and climbed to third in the final poll after beating St. Thomas in three sets at the National Championship site.
